After six months, Southtown's Belgian bistro La Frite is reopening. The intimate space for mussels, steak frites, and more has been celebrated as one of San Antonio's best restaurants

The restaurant temporarily closed in November 2021 due to a water leak. At the time, the owners decided to use the time to do a "light remodel," according to social media posts. The kitchen and vent hood were in need of a "smile" after the deluge, the note to customers says.

La Frite started this week with long-awaited news. On Monday, May 16, the social media pages for the restaurant announced the reopening.

"It's official we're reopening on Tuesday May 24th for lunch and dinner," the post says.

Reservations will be required for the first two weeks. Customers are able to snag their spot online, via the La Frite website. Multiple time slots are available for the reopening night as of this write.

La Frite owner Miles Donnelly tells MySA that the restaurant is "ready" to return to service.

"All of our staff has been retained throughout the closure, because they are integral to the success of the restaurant and the family that we have created here," Donnelly says. "All the familiar faces will be here to greet the customers."

The news garnered a thread of praise hands emojis emphasizing the excitement shared by fans. For those who will be trying La Frite for the first time after the hiatus, the menu includes seafood, poultry, and steak options, as well as the restaurant's signature moules frites. The menu highlight has been praised by the San Antonio Express-News in recent years. In March 2019, La Frite was named one of San Antonio's best restaurants.

There's also a $78 chef-curated prix fixe menu for two.

La Frite was founded by chef Damien Watel. In 2009, he sold the restaurant to mother-son duo Miles and Icy Donnelly.

"Under the Donnellys’ leadership, La Frite quickly gained its status as a hotspot in the uber-hip and trendy Southtown neighborhood," the website says. "As the area developed into one of the city’s cultural epicenters, La Frite transformed from a neighborhood gathering place into a must-visit locale with it's casual fine dining atmosphere."

La Frite is located at 728 S Alamo Street.
