Texas Longhorn linebacker Jake Ehlinger reportedly died of an accidental drug overdose, according to a statement from his family.

In May, the 20-year-old business student was found dead near the University of Texas at Austin campus. Austin Police did not specify the conditions in which Ehlinger was found, but told the news outlets that they didn't consider his death suspicious.

According to a report from KXAN, the family stated they learned about Ehlinger's accidental overdose May 6 from what's believed to be the prescription anti-anxiety medication Xanax laced with fentanyl.

"As our family continues to process Jake's death, we felt it was important to share these details with the hope that Jake will not have died in vain," the family wrote in a statement on Thursday, October 21. "We pray that sharing Jake's story will help shed light on this problem and prevent other families from also tragically losing a loved one."

Ehlinger is the brother of former Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger, who was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts earlier this year. Jake served as Longhorns walk-on linebacker after graduating from Westlake High School, where he was honorable mention All-State and named the District 25-6A defensive MVP as a senior.

Ehlinger was a member of Austin's storied Ehlinger family. Both Jake and his brother Sam played football at Westlake High School before joining the Longhorns. Despite having one year left of eligibility, Sam Ehlinger declared for the draft this year and was selected just this past Saturday by the Indianapolis Colts in the sixth round.

The death shocked the sports world with tributes pouring in from across the nation. Legendary UT quarterback Vince Young shared his own condolences along with a vintage photo of young Jake posing with his brother and their cousins during a Halloween celebration.
