Father accused of fatally injuring 3-month-old daughter in 2018, then lying about it

A 30-year-old man was arrested Wednesday, more than a year after he allegedly injured his 3-month-old daughter so badly she later died.

Arthur Martinez now faces a charge of injury to a child causing severe bodily injury in the death of Melanie Martinez. He will be booked into the Bexar County Jail on Wednesday.

According to police, Martinez called 911 on May 7, 2018, and informed dispatchers his daughter was blue in the face and wasn't breathing.

When she was hospitalized, doctors discovered she had suffered severe head trauma and retinal hemorrhaging.

Martinez initially chalked the girls injuries up to a tumble from the couch, but later changed his story.

"Since the very beginning of being interviewed with detectives, Mr. Martinez has consistently changed his story, and his story does not match up with the injuries that this child suffered," said Jennifer Rodriguez, a spokeswoman for the police department.

Melanie Martinez died five days after she was hospitalized.

Homicide detectives eventually passed the case off to the Bexar County District Attorney's Office, who then presented the case before a grand jury.

The jury issued an arrest warrant on the first-degree felony charge, and Martinez was subsequently arrested on the South Side.
